HISTORY OF

AUSTRALIA

Origins : Australia's original inhabitants, known as Australian Aborigines,

have the longest cultural history in the world, with origins dating back to the last Ice Age.

16^th century : Europeans went to Australia : Portuguese, Dutch and

English navigators (for example Captain James Cook).

In 1779, Joseph Banks (a naturalist on Cook's voyage) suggested that Britain could solve

problems in its prisons by transporting British prisoners to New South Wales.

In 1787, the First Fleet* for Botany Bay was

under the command of Captain Arthur Philip,

who was to become the colony's first governor.

The fleet comprised 11 boats , 750 prisoners, 4 companies

of marines and foods for two years. For the new arrivals, New South Wales was a difficult and horrible place.

1850’s :Free settlers began to be attracted to Australia over

the next decades, but it was the discovery of gold in the 1850’s

that changed the face of the colony.

Aborigines were pushed off their tribal lands as new settlers

occupied land for farming.

The Industrial Revolution in England wanted lot of raw materials*,

and Australia's agricultural and mineral resources expanded to meet the demand.

Modern History :

Australia became a nation

on 1 January 1901.

Australian troops fought with

the British during the First World War

and the Second World War.
