The geography of Canada is vast and diversified. Occupying the greatest part of the Scandinavian portion of the North-American continent (precisely 41%), Canada is the second largest country in the world in terms of total surface, after Russia.

Canada covers an immense territory between the Pacific Ocean, in the west, and the Atlantic Ocean, in the east, with the United States of America in the south and the North-West (Alaska), and the Arctic Ocean in the north; Greenland is in the North-East. Covering a territory of 9 984 670 km2 (ground: 9 093 507 km2; water: 891 163 km2), the surface of Canada is a little less of the three fifths of that of Russia; Canada is 1,3 times larger than Australia, though a little smaller than Europe and more than 40,9 times larger than the United Kingdom.

Provinces and territories

Canada is composed of ten provinces and three territories. The provinces are Alberta, British Columbia, Manitoba, New Brunswick, Newfoundland and Labrador, Nova Scotia, Ontario, Prince Edward Island, Quebec, and Saskatchewan. The three territories are the Northwest Territories, Nunavut, and Yukon. The provinces have a large degree of autonomy from the government.

The provinces are responsible for most of Canada's social programs:  such as health care, education, and welfare. Equalization payments are made by the federal government to ensure that reasonably uniform standards of services and taxation are kept between the richer and poorer provinces.
